Should I be aching after exercising?

April 16th, 2009 · 3 Comments

Hi,

I've recently started fast walking/jogging again after putting on a bit of weight! I stretch before and after, and usually go 4 times a week for about 40 - 50 minutes. Last week even though I was stretching the same I was really aching, but I felt I had really worked my muscles; this week I have done exactly the same if not more running and I'm not sore? Am I still working my muscles just as much?

Also, I usually do 4 days in a row then have a 3 day rest (usually the weekend!) is this ok as I have read you should have rest days to let your body repair.

I hope what I'm doing is enough excersise as I just really want to tone up!

Thanks, Amy

      hey, amy!

me too, i used to have that problem. i don't know how it came or how it went.

you should do at least 10 minutes of warm-ups (stretching) before exercising, and 10 minutes of cool-down exercises, to prevent cramps.

eating properly and having a properly balanced diet helps a lot too.

if all else fails, i suggest you consult a doctor, or let time heal your aching.

If you're not sore now, your body is adjusting. You're working just as much. You do need time to repair, but that's mostly if you're doing intense training (i.e. occasional 2 workouts a day). You might also be better off scattering one of the days in between that row. It'd help to mix up the workouts too, esp since jogging is so bad on the joints. Try cycling, swimming, yoga etc. You'll hear experts go on & on about the 'science' of it, but variety is the best first step.

Maybe spread out the rest days more evenly. I have aches in my left hip from running and find that if I run 2 days, rest one day, run 2 days and rest 2 days, it seems to be the best.
