its been over 5 years since i have actually swam. i started yesterday and i was swimming pretty slow. i had my head under water most of the time so i was holding my breathe while stroking most of the time, i came up for air when i needed it but kept going. id get to the end of the lap, out of breath. is that mainly what im looking to do when im swimming as a cardio exercise?

I would suggest you try to tread water for a long period of time for at least an hour. You can go at a pace you like and see how long you can go without stopping. That will build up your muscle as well as shed of a ton of fat. Just remember that it is better to swim for long periods of time rather than swimming like crazy and then resting after one little lap. Also, remember that anyone can tread no matter if your Michael Phelps or an unexperienced swimmer. Try this and you won’t believe how good of an excercise this is for you. Good luck.

Side Breathe & Breathing!!! and head position!!!! Exhale(let your bubbles out)/ turn to the side and inhale , IT will take two to four weeks before you start to “remember” and really get into the routine of it!! It will be life changing if you can swim 2 to 3 times a week:):) consistently. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!!!!!! agualobo@yahoo.com

I have been swimming laps for almost 8 years. I am horrible on the skill department.
It takes me 33 minutes to swim 1000m, slower than it did a few years ago.
I am not great at all, but it is good exercise.
