I need to start working out more– I'm REALLY out of shape. I've been eating better, but I need to start doing more than some pushups and crunches before bed. I've always loved swimming, but I haven't gone lap swimming in a long time.
Is it good exercise, in terms of cardio, muscle building and burning calories?

Swimming is the best type of exercise!!! It pretty much works every part of your body.

swimming is an overall excellent work out.
the types of strokes and the speed is a really good cardio workout, and they build muscle. you should try doing the same stroke for four laps then switch it up and do another stroke for another four laps and so on.

Damn I'd love to go swimming but the closest swimming pool that offers lane swimming all the time charges £30 a month.
