14 is an okay age to start lifting. They discourage adolescents under 12 from lifting weights. If you are worried don't do any squats or anything that puts strain on your joints. Use lighter weights at first until your body develops the proper muscles to lift the extra weight.
I would just do sit-ups, pull-ups and push-ups. They strengthen the body, but you're not risking anything. But if you really do end up doing heavy weights and dumbell…then make sure you have a spot.
Yeah, get rid of the idea you get shorter by working out. That's just not true. At 14 you will keep growing. All football players work out, from preteens even- and most are not short.
