I know that in order to lose a pound a week, you must have a calorie deficit of 3,500 (the equivalent of losing 500 calories a day). However, some days when I don't lose 500 calories a day, I still manage to lose a pound by the end of the week. I know the body burns calories constantly, whether you're exercising or not, but around how many calories does your body burn in a normal day without exercise? It must burn quite a few if you can still lose weight without exercising?

Please can I get serious answers, I really am curious.

Thanks :)

      Metabolism.
It is important to keep it moving. Some people's is higher than others naturally. But that doesn't matter!

I changed my diet and dropped weight without really cutting calories or feeling hungry. And I did not work out at all! I just changed the way I eat. And I don't eat anything I really don't like!

What do I eat now: lots of fruits, vegetables, dairy, fish, seafood, nuts, seeds, and olives. I eat less than 40g of sugar per day (on average). I also eat "in the Zone" at most meals. See the book "Enter the Zone" by Dr. Sears, it explains the science behind how food acts in your body. You don't have to eat what I eat, eat what you want, but read the book and you will have a good understanding of the science behind food. With understanding it is much easier to take action each day.

I still eat dark chocolate and iced tea (without sugar) every day and don't gain anything!

I really recommend reading his book and others. Experiment, try different things. I truly believe you can find a way to lose weight and burn calories, feel full or satisfied all the time, and eat whenever you are hungry! The food I eat is low-calorie, but I really don't have to cut calories below where I feel satisfied. I did in the past and once I lost weight I began to feel weak.

I have been eating this way for a year and I will never go back!

The amount of calories your body burns without exercising is called your Basal Metabolic Rate, or BMR. You can estimate your BMR here by plugging in your age, sex, height, and weight, or you can go to a fitness center to take a metabolic test and get a more accurate figure. You would burn your BMR if you were in a coma and did not move all day–even if you are completely sedentary, you will still make small movements throughout the day that add to your total burn. Go here to estimate your daily calorie burn by selecting the appropriate activity category.
