So i've been trying to increase the amount of push ups i can do lately. I do push ups 3 times a week. My goal is to do 36 pushups in the first set and then 40 pushups in the second set. By doing the exercises, i have been able to get up to 36 pushups in the first set and 30 pushups in the second. However, whenver i am able to reach around 30 pushups in the second set, I always end up hitting a plateau and i end up doing even less pushups the next time i do the exercises 2 days later. how do i work through this plateau so i can reach my goal of 40 pushups in the second set?

Try a different type of upperbody strengthening for a little while. You'll feel more motivated, and the muscle confusion of the new exercise will make you stronger. When you restart your push-ups after about 2 weeks of the new exercise, you will most likely be able to reach your goal much easier. Good luck.

Do pushups on an incline. Put your feet on a couch and then do the pushups on an incline this will get your stronger thus allowing you to do more pushups. Ultimately you will get stronger if you start doing bench presses as opposed to pushups.

Hello Matthew W, The decrease in your performance is probably because your muscles haven't totally recovered from your last work out. Muscle fatigue may be especially true if it's a really strenuous workout. You may be able to get past it by cross-training. Try cutting back a little on the push-ups, sett and reps, and supplement by adding in some standing cable crosses or if you're doing these at home, you can use theraband tubing. It's a similar exercise, utilizing similar muscle groups but adds more instability and will work more of the directional muscle fibers. In a few weeks you should be able to to more of the push-ups. I hope this helps!
