Does overstretching your muscles damage your joints?

October 29th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Every second day or so I do stretches my dance teacher taught me to improve my flexibility. Some people I know are concerned that I could possibly be damaging my joints from doing these stretches (in particular, my hip joints). This has made me very concerned, even though I warm up properly and stretch safely each time. Any advice from people who have had a fair amount of dance experience, or dance teachers out there would really be helpful!! Thanks 8D

Stretching safely and responsibly is good for your body. Unless you are getting into contorted positions and then bearing weight on the joints in ways they were not meant to bear weight, there should not be a problem.

"Overstretching" is not the same as "stretching a lot". Overstretching is when you push your muscles too far too quickly, which can trigger muscle spasms as your body’s way of protecting the muscle from being torn off the bone. You can also develop strains in the more superficial fibers as well, which can take months to heal. Overstretching is a bad thing. Stretching a lot and working responsibly to improve your flexibility is good for your muscles.
