Practice your scales. Major and minor pentatonic, blues scales etc. Get real familiar with them. You’ll need to be able to do other things while playing them such as sing, communicate with other band members (ie.drummer) and even chat to audience members while playing. strange skill to develop but necessary.
Play along with songs you like and best of all jam with friends. No amount of lessons or exercises will replace actual playing with others.
Well done on the Grade 5 exam too.
One more thing I recommend to students is to sing aloud every note you play when practicing. This associates notes you play with the fingering you use. Basically you will get to see the notes. You’ll be able to practice bass lines just by humming the notes to yourself and imaging the fingers playing the notes. A form of visualisation. It has worked for me very well. I can hear a song and hum the bass. As a result I can learn a bass line without picking my a gutar. Very handy indeed.
